How do I promote my site?

Your web site is a marketing vehicle for your company or interests. You will want to attract new customers/visitors and provide valuable information for existing ones. The obvious place to start is by placing your web site's address on all your existing marketing materials, including your business card and letter head. Don’t forget you can place it in your voice mail message or on the store window as well. Basically anywhere you would put your phone number is where your web address should be. Your email address should be on your business card as well. One last thing, DO NOT FORGET TO CHECK YOUR EMAIL ON A REGULAR BASIS! Not responding to email can sometimes be more irritating to customers that not returning calls.

The next place to cover is on the web itself. You will want to register with as many search engines and directories as possible beginning with Yahoo, WebCrawler, Lycos, and AltaVista.   Look for an "add URL" option at each of these sites as well as links to other search engines.   Right now, there is no charge to register with these search engines.

You can pay to have your site registered as well. Before you start you will want to consider a few items first.

There is a difference between a search engine and a directory. Yahoo! is commonly referred to as a search engine when it is actually a Web Page Directory with a distinct structure. Lycos, Excite or Hot Bot are search engines. What’s the difference?

A Directory is like the Yellow Pages in the phone book. You are placed in a particular category or multiple categories if you choose. Users will search on a name / subject / or category to find requested information. Results will be displayed in subject/categories.

A Search Engine is an index of words and concepts. Search engines do not care what type of business you are or what your name is. They just index and count words or phrases. Users will search based on keywords or phrases. Results will be displayed based on the accuracy of your words verses the words on the web site(s).   Now some, search engines will require you to enter keywords or a description for your site when you request that your site is referenced but most will search the text of your site including any information you include in the META tags of your HTML page.

See the Search Engine Watch site for detailed information about search engines.
