META TAGS
The Web is huge and contains information on many
different subjects. The way most people find information is to use one of the search
engines or directory services that exist like Alta
Vista, Excite,or Yahoo,
for looking up links to relevant information. But what if you find that your site
never shows up when you do a search? The <META> tag's NAME attribute can help
you out. The <META> tag can only be placed in the <HEAD> of the HTML
document.
If you set "keywords" as the <META>
tag's value, you can specify many different keywords in the CONTENT attribute that robots
and spiders (those programs that find Web sites for search engines) will hit.
For example, the Monmouth Internet home page, which
advertises our services as an Internet Service Provider, uses the <META> tag with
the following keywords:
| <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="internet, v90, x2, flex,
k56flex, analog, pri, digital, domains, web, www, provider, new, jersey, toms river,
spring lake, red bank, perth amboy, dunellen, elizabeth, newark, brunswick, madison, new
york city, manhattan, bronx, brooklyn, staten island, yonkers, queens, pages, modems,
manalapan, englishtown, t1, isdn, frame relay"> |
Make a list of keywords that best fit
the purpose of your web site. The case of the words does not matter but singular and
plural references may. Also different verb tenses are important. Search
engines may see boat and boats as two distinct subjects. Likewise, they may also see
boat and boating as two different subjects. Typically you may use up to 1000
characters or less.
Also, if you set "description" as the NAME
value, you can include an outline of the site rather than a string of keywords. Your
description will appear in a search engine's results page instead of the first 200 or so
words on the page which is what would normally display if you neglect to place
<META> tags within your page. Here's the <META> tag
"description" for the Monmouth Internet site:
| <META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Connect to a Backbone not a
Wishbone."> |
Create a short (100 characters)
description of your business or services. It should be concise and accurate.
Your best bet is to include both keywords and a
description as you can have more than one <META> tag on a page. One last
thing, <META> tags don't need to be closed.
